Dr. Kelz on Mental Health
Leader. Educator. Therapist. Author. Coach. Mentor. Speaker. Presenter. Consultant.
Let's remove the misconception, stigma, and shame.
|
I have been an educator since 1998 and a therapist since 2010. I want to talk to and teach anyone who is ready to help remove the stigma from mental health. Let's have an open dialogue about mental health stigma and how it hurts our society, the relationship between mental and physical health, and the misclassification of mental health. How do we remove access to care barriers for vulnerable communities? Increase resources? Connect people with exceptional resources? Create an environment that embraces mental health that reduces shame and refuses to act in judgement?

About My Research
What can organizations do to intentionally promote mental wellness? How can faith-based organizations support mental health while honoring their spiritual foundations? And perhaps most importantly, how can the spiritual and medical models coexist to meet the diverse needs of the people we serve?
Strategies that promote mental wellness are beneficial for everyone, but they can be critical for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Organizations have an opportunity to create environments where mental wellness is understood, supported, and integrated into the culture rather than addressed only when a crisis occurs.
As part of the requirements for earning my Ph.D., I conducted an original research study examining the perceived role of faith leaders in promoting mental health in impoverished communities. One of the most important lessons reinforced through this work was simple: it starts at the head. Leadership influences whether mental health is acknowledged, how it is discussed, and whether people feel safe seeking support.
From this research, I developed DESTINE-Y, an eight-step framework designed to help faith-based organizations increase mental health awareness, strengthen their capacity to respond to mental health needs, and begin implementing intentional mental health promotion activities.
Although developed within a faith-based context, the framework can be adapted for use across organizations and communities seeking to build cultures where mental wellness is understood, supported, and prioritized.
Mental wellness does not have to compete with faith. Spiritual support and professional mental health care can coexist, each contributing to the well-being of the whole person.
